Abstract
A doutrina filosófica e econômica da "mão invisível" foi formulada pelo filósofo escocês Adam Smith (1723-1790), que é hoje considerado um dos maiores expoentes da economia clássica, assim como o pai da economia política. Seu principal trabalho é A Riqueza das Nações. A tese principal de seu trabalho é que a chave para o bem-estar social está no crescimento econômico, que é reforçado por uma divisão adequada do trabalho e pela concorrência entre seres humanos livres, iguais e relativamente egoístas. A divisão do trabalho é aprofundada na medida em que há uma expansão dos mercados e, portanto, da especialização.
